Illustration of the network architecture. The part of the network with 100 excitatory neurons (white circles) and 16 inhibitory neurons (superimposed on excitatory neuron - half black) are shown. Each excitatory neuron has two excitatory synaptic inputs from nearest 8 excitatory neurons and two inhibitory inputs from one nearest inhibitory neuron. Presynaptic neurons for excitatory connections are selected randomly. The range of output synaptic connections from one inhibitory neuron is shown in A and B shows the range of output connections from one excitatory neuron. Arrows in A and B indicate randomly chosen actual connection. For this particular network each inhibitory interneuron has double connections with all neighboring excitatory neurons. (Connections between inhibitory neuron and overlapping excitatory neuron in A are not shown).
